Training in Denver: A Local Guide to Races, Trails and the Mile High Scene

Two runners jog along a foothills trail at dusk above the lights of Denver.

Denver is a training town. Lifters, runners, HYROX racers, climbers, skiers: the city has a bit of everything, with mountains on the horizon. Whether you just moved here or have trained here for years, here's a plain guide to the things that make training in Denver different, and the local dates worth knowing.

Training at 5,280 feet

Denver's official elevation is exactly one mile: 5,280 feet (City and County of Denver). If you're new, give yourself time. A 2015 research review reports that people from lower elevations commonly sleep poorly during their first few nights at high altitude, though most of that research uses sites higher than Denver (Bloch et al., 2015). There's more in Sleeping at Altitude in Denver.

The dry air

Visit Denver puts it simply: "The Mile High City is also extremely dry, so it is a good idea to drink more water than usual" (Visit Denver). Carry water to every session, and keep a bottle by the bed.

The races on the calendar

A few big public dates, from the official race sites:
- HYROX Denver: November 12–15, 2026, at the National Western Center – Stockyards Event Center. It's HYROX's first Denver race (address on the official event page). Racing it? Read HYROX Denver Race Week.
- Denver's Colfax Marathon: Sunday, May 16, 2027, with a 6:00 AM start in City Park (Colfax Marathon).
- BOLDERBoulder 10K: Memorial Day 2027 (Monday, May 31), up the road in Boulder (BOLDERBoulder).

Spring races mean winter training blocks. For runners, see Sleep for Runners. For the night before any race, see Can't Sleep Before a Race?.

Trails and the mountains

Denver is near the mountains, not in them. Visit Denver describes the city as sitting "12 miles east of the 'foothills,'" which climb to 11,000 feet, with Front Range peaks rising to 14,000 feet beyond. Two local facts from the same page:
- The Colorado Trail is "a 500-mile-long hiking trail, stretching from Durango to Denver."
- The road to the top of Mount Blue Sky "is the highest paved road in North America."

(Visit Denver)

Mountain days go higher than the city, so the altitude notes above count double. In winter, see Ski Season Sleep.

Finding your gym

Denver has a wide range of training spaces, and we're not going to rank them. The right one depends on how you train. Common types:
- Strength gyms with platforms, racks and competition equipment, for powerlifting and strongman.
- Functional-fitness and race-training gyms with sleds, ergs and wall balls, for HYROX-style training.
- Running groups and clubs that meet for long runs and track sessions.
- Big-box gyms for flexible hours and lots of locations.

What to check before you join:
1. Equipment for your sport (platforms, sleds, ergs, bars).
2. Hours that match when you actually train.
3. Coaching and programming, if you want it.
4. A day pass or trial, so you can train there before you sign up.
5. The community. You'll be there several days a week.

Recovery studios

Some people add a recovery studio (sauna, cold plunge and the like) to their week. If you do, treat it as part of your routine, and check what's offered and how it's run before you book. Sleep is still the part of recovery you do every night.

Fitting sleep into a Denver training week

An expert consensus (Walsh et al., 2020) on athlete sleep reports that training, travel and competition affect athletes' sleep. It recommends an approach based on your own sleep need rather than one fixed number for everyone (Walsh et al., 2020). Some simple habits:
- Fixed wake time. The Sleep Foundation suggests trying "to wake up at the same time," weekday or weekend (Sleep Foundation).
- Cool room. About 65°F, within a 65 to 68°F range (Sleep Foundation).
- Water by the bed. It's dry here.
- Bedding that breathes, from the sheets to the pillow.
